Assignment Two

Purpose:
Educate: These animations are mainly used to educate the young audience. Some examples are kid education dvd's that teach the audience knowledge while entertaining.

Entertain: These movies are used to purely used to entertain the audience and can have different audience types for each movie. Some movies like 'The Bee Movie', 'Early Man' and 'flushed Away' are based to entertain children as they have no drugs, alcohol, swearing or violence in them. Movies like 'Family Guy' and 'Sausage Party' are aimed more at the older audience as they have swear words and references in drugs and alcohol.

Inform: Telling the audience an idea and giving them reasons for for and against the topic. For example, making a movie or tv series about your view on equality and making the audience connect to certain characters to try and get them to understand your side and why they should believe you.
The movie 'Hidden Figures' shows the audience what it was like for black women to work for NASA was like, and showed them the good and bad parts of the jobs and why we as a community should reflect from the movie and change our prospectives on things.

Feature film:
Feature film is the running time of the movie or tv show episode. The average of a film running time is at least 40 minutes and can be longer than 80 minutes. The running time is a very important thing tot think about how making a film as some groups of people wont want to watch a movie no more than 2 hrs, so depending on what the film is about and what the target audience is will be different for each movie. The benefits from choosing the right film running time is that the audience will become more interested in the film and want to see it.
Depending on the length time of the film is the time of how long the production of the animation will take to make. Most animations take around a week to have a minutes worth of footage. What is good to think about while making an animation to make make sure you know exactly what you want to film so it shortens the production and film time of the movie.

Advertising:
To advertise your film / animation you will need to show audience the fun and interesting parts of the film so it makes them want to watch the full film. They key things to consider when doing this is making sure you don't tell the whole story and leaving parts a mystery and making the movie seem as entertaining as possible because no one wants to see a boring and slow movie / animation. You will also need to custom your advert to your key audience. So if a movie was for young children the advert will be colourful, loud and very all over the place to keep the children entertained and away from being bored. However, if you are making a horror movie for young adults, you'd want to make the advert as scary and mystery like as possible so they will want to know the answers to the questions you leave. Some other ways to make your advert successful is to break the 4th wall and talk to your audience. This is normally done by narrator who talks to the audience about the film as well as asking rhetorical questions to keep the viewers to think about the movie and lead on to watching it in cinemas.
Adverts that have stop motion animation are:
McCoy's crisps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpFqISko8b8
Doritos - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goDQ6R1hqbs
The audience type for both of these adverts is any age as there is no age restriction to eating the two products so the companies will reach out to all ages as it is a universal product.
Red Bull - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTo-c7bR7wI
The audience type for this advert is 16+ as that is the age where you are legally allowed to drink Red Bull.

Music videos:
Music videos are used to make the people who don't normally listen to music to be able to watch something while listening to the artists song to attract people who look for short emotional films . They are also used to make the listeners of the songs be entertained while listening to the music and listen to the songs multiple times and hopefully telling other people about the video which makes the song become more and more known and hopefully liked. The benefits to this is that the artist can become more known and will be able to produce more songs and make more profit.
Some music videos that use stop motion are:
Its Magic - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGoOhZN_PR8
This music video is based on older people as they are the people who listened to these types of songs when they were younger and are most likely still listening to them. It is also based on people who create stop motion animations themselves.
Wide Awake - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcMkQwOmx9g
This music video's audience would be katy perry's audience, which is mainly teenager girls. But as it is also a fan-made stop motion animation it will also be focused on showing animators and people who create films themselves.

Computer games:
Computer games are made to entertain people who like to go into a virtual world and do anything they want while playing a storyline. Games have become very popular and are a good way to advertise objects that are likely to be bought by the people playing the games.
Computer games have a whole range of age restricted games. Games that can be played at 18 plus are; GTA, Assassins Creed, Insanity and COD. So when these games came out the trailers for them was based of adults older than 18. Games like Minecraft, Fortnite and Lego games are all based for children around 12 and less (Fortnite 12+) so the trailers will be for the younger audience and possibly having a narrator, colour and a lot of things to do in the game.

Websites:
Stop motion is used in websites to make the website look more fresh and modern to impress the people viewing it as well as keeping people entertained while going through the website. It is also used to make the website more fun for younger people looking through the website to make it more universal and can be used for everyone. Nowadays most companies use it in their websites so their company can look more professional. They also use it so advertise more of their products from anywhere on the website.
Companies like:
Apple, Samsung and clothing brands like New Look, Timer-Lands and Gucci.

TV:
TV's are used to make the viewers become entertained and 'addicted' to the things they watch and make them come back every day or week to watch the programme or film. TV programmes and films have breaks around every 10 minutes which gives around 3 times of advert time, giving the people selling the product to reach millions of people who are more likely to but the products.
TV shows / Movies that are aired on tv that use stop motion animation are:
Fantastic Mr.Fox - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2igjYFojUo
The audience type for this movie is children as it is based off a children's novel and is very well known from a children's book writer.
The Simpsons - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB7VF980cEA
This TV animation series is originally ment for adults and people around the 20's. But when it first aired young people watched it and loved the humor in it so it gradually turned into an any age programme but any young person watching been allowed to watch it,
The Clay Kids - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCCRhGbGJfg
This animated tv series is directed for young teens around 10+ as there are jokes for younger people and is based around a group of young friends.

Techniques and Formats:
Time-Lapse:
A time-lapse is used in movies to show the duration of time and what period you are now in. The editors can be creative with this as there is no wrong way at doing them. Movies like 'Twilight' use them to show how a character is feeling over a period of time. Other movies would use them to show the seasons change, the change in landscape and more. Some documentaries use time-lapse to show the audience the destruction in a landscape.

Plasticine:
Plasticine is used in movies to create human like objects or random non-living things. It is used to make a story done by man-made things. The only thing with using plasticine is that you will have to control the amount of times the object blinks and to make sure everything that is moveable is moving in each frame. Movies like 'Wallace and Gromit', 'Alice' made in 1988 and a movie that came out this year, 2018, called 'Early man'.

Claymation:
Claymation is a form of stop motion animation and is part of the plasticine animation type.
Examples of this animation are:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPVi_5JIeNE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA2XrXeHSRg
Pingu the penguin - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJlWLVgozVs

Found objects:
This type of animation is done by using everyday objects and turn them into other things in a movie or make them use the objects around them to make the film more interesting. An example of this animation is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woG9-k7kWE4

Cut out:
Cut out animation is a 2D animation with cut out pictures of the characters, props and backgrounds. This type of animation is easier to make then others because there is the same objects and only a few pictures for each character, so it is a much faster process of animation to film. An example of this animation would be Charlie and Lola.

Puppetry:
This type of animation is made by puppets. The objects that are the focal point of each movie are puppets and are controlled by either strings or sticks. This type of animation is for children entertainment and can be either recorded or played in a circus. An example of this animation is 'The Muppets'.

Human Stop Motion (Pixilation)
This animation type is made by taking photos with the main object moving slightly in each frame and when sped up it looks like it is moving at what ever pace you want it to.
Some examples of this animation is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT1lpCdlr68
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkxWdSX1gmA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3p2TZ5q9to

I think the animation type that is best suited for a younger audience would be Claymation or Plasticine, as these are very creative and if used right and have breathing and blinks in the eyes, the clay figures that are ment to be like human can come to life and look more realistic. It is also an animation that can be more creative with colour in the filming process, having any colour to choose from while creating the characters, it can be as dull or colourful as you want it to be. I think this is good for the audience because children are always surrounded by colour and the animation you would make would make the children want to watch it. Movies like 'Pingu' are a great example because it is about an animal that goes on adventures and has sound effects and colours that makes the children want to watch more.

I think the animation type that is best suited for an older audience would be Human Stop Motion as it is more relatable as the audience are watching something that is like themselves. As humans play characters in this type of animation it makes the older audience want to watch as it can tell more adult themed storylines and situations that happen in real life and will make the older viewers enjoy watching something more realistic and would make them want to watch more later on.

  1. Good effort Freddie for feature films can you add a note about audiences perhaps use the BBFC. Some good personal opinion on here Freddie which is good clearly not cut and paste. On Park and Burton add something on audiences use the BBFC how they are popular films what the models are like as compared to Harreyhousen for example
