Unit 24

Mood and atmosphere
Moods are used to make the characters feel more involved with the scene and feel more relate-able towards it. Moods are very important for the films because it makes the final product seem more realistic and will attract the groups of people for the mood the film has. The atmosphere could be described as empty, busy, loud and lonely. The atmosphere gives more evidence for the mood and makes the audience believe what is happening in the scene is real.

Audio fade
Audio fade is used to make the process of two different scenes have a smooth transaction and leave the audience not knowing in the change of scene by the harsh sound effects. Audio fade is mainly used in the beginning and ending of a film to start the film in a smooth and calm way, it shows the audience straight away whether the film will be calm and peaceful or would have a lot of action in it.
Examples:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WD074DMpZI
This clip shows a simple audio fade in and out through showing pictures.

Dialogue
Dialogue is a convocation between two people or is telling the audience the thoughts of someone. It it used to show the audience the story of the film in a easy and fast way and also show the characters personalities in each scene. romantic, fantasy, mystery, horror, comedy.
Examples:
Animation - Gnomeo and Juliet (trailer) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgO03BFtvSc
Romantic - To All The Boys I Loved Before - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkhHydYKLZA
Fantasy - Fantastic Beasts - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkhHydYKLZA
Horror - Jigsaw - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tbtn93__jnM
Thriller - You (Trailer) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga1m0wjzscU
comedy - Miranda - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR2pHI5MoRc

Voice over
Filming and recording sound separately and putting them together when editing also when you don't like a part of audio in a scene you can rerecord it and add it to the film. People use this to make sure the dialogue is clear and understandable. This is commonly used in documentaries to give facts to the displayed image being shown to the audience. It is also used in animations to give the animations thoughts and make them more entertaining to watch.
Examples: blue planethttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_38JDGnr0vA
Blue Planet is a documentary series that shows the life in the ocean and what happens in their world. The use a narrator to explain the film displayed to the audience so while they are watching they are told important and interesting information.
Aladdin - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HrmBXgiwDU
Aladdin is an animation and has voice overs for the characters. We use dialogue in animations to bring them to life and show the audience what the character is like and what their personality is as well as telling the story.

Ambient sound
Ambient sounds is the sound effects that is happening in the background of a scene. Like people walking, talking, eating and the sounds of wind and music. It is used to make a scene look as realistic as possible and to make the audience feel more involved in the film while watching it.
Examples:

Sound bridge
Sound bridging is attaching two scenes with a sound effect to create a smooth transaction. It can be used in the beginning of the film to show the audience the location, weather and mood let of the film. It helps show the audience what the film is about in an entertaining way without having any dialogue for a period of time.
Examples:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIkpD2Nr5yI

Foley sounds
Foley sounds are sound effects recorded after the filming process that makes little movement in the film more vibrant. Used to have louder footsteps, the sound of objects touching each other or the movement of objects. It makes little actions in the film feel more alive and makes every part of the film more realistic.

Synchronous and Asynchronous
Synchronous
sound matches the cation happening and is synchronized. Used when the audience can see what is happening and the sound effects make the scene look more interesting and creates more tension as the audience can hear everything around them.
Examples:

Asynchronous
Sound matches the action happening but it is not synchronized. This is used to make the scene have more tension as you could hear the action but not see what is happening to make the audience more scared.
Examples:

Sound Motif
Used to get the audience emotionally attached to a character to make them more sympathetic if something bad or good happens to them. Used in movies that have a sad story line, directors use this a lot at the start to make the audience feel an attachment straight away.
Examples:

ADR -
Automatic Dialogue Replacement
ADR is recording dialogue after the filming process to make sure the dialogue is clear and easy to hear for the audience. It is also used to make sound effects, like screams, more loud and realistic. Like if someone was launched from an explosion and had a scream edited in to make it more realistic for the audience.

Assignment Two

Purpose:
Educate: These animations are mainly used to educate the young audience. Some examples are kid education dvd's that teach the audience knowledge while entertaining.

Entertain: These movies are used to purely used to entertain the audience and can have different audience types for each movie. Some movies like 'The Bee Movie', 'Early Man' and 'flushed Away' are based to entertain children as they have no drugs, alcohol, swearing or violence in them. Movies like 'Family Guy' and 'Sausage Party' are aimed more at the older audience as they have swear words and references in drugs and alcohol.

Image result for the bee movieImage result for early manImage result for flushed away

Image result for family guyImage result for sausage party

Inform: Telling the audience an idea and giving them reasons for for and against the topic. For example, making a movie or tv series about your view on equality and making the audience connect to certain characters to try and get them to understand your side and why they should believe you.
The movie 'Hidden Figures' shows the audience what it was like for black women to work for NASA was like, and showed them the good and bad parts of the jobs and why we as a community should reflect from the movie and change our prospectives on things.

Feature film:
Feature film is the running time of the movie or tv show episode. The average of a film running time is at least 40 minutes and can be longer than 80 minutes. The running time is a very important thing tot think about how making a film as some groups of people wont want to watch a movie no more than 2 hrs, so depending on what the film is about and what the target audience is will be different for each movie. The benefits from choosing the right film running time is that the audience will become more interested in the film and want to see it.
Depending on the length time of the film is the time of how long the production of the animation will take to make. Most animations take around a week to have a minutes worth of footage. What is good to think about while making an animation to make make sure you know exactly what you want to film so it shortens the production and film time of the movie.

Advertising:
To advertise your film / animation you will need to show audience the fun and interesting parts of the film so it makes them want to watch the full film. They key things to consider when doing this is making sure you don't tell the whole story and leaving parts a mystery and making the movie seem as entertaining as possible because no one wants to see a boring and slow movie / animation. You will also need to custom your advert to your key audience. So if a movie was for young children the advert will be colourful, loud and very all over the place to keep the children entertained and away from being bored. However, if you are making a horror movie for young adults, you'd want to make the advert as scary and mystery like as possible so they will want to know the answers to the questions you leave. Some other ways to make your advert successful is to break the 4th wall and talk to your audience. This is normally done by narrator who talks to the audience about the film as well as asking rhetorical questions to keep the viewers to think about the movie and lead on to watching it in cinemas.
Adverts that have stop motion animation are:
McCoy's crisps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpFqISko8b8
Doritos - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goDQ6R1hqbs
The audience type for both of these adverts is any age as there is no age restriction to eating the two products so the companies will reach out to all ages as it is a universal product.
Red Bull - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTo-c7bR7wI
The audience type for this advert is 16+ as that is the age where you are legally allowed to drink Red Bull.

Music videos:
Music videos are used to make the people who don't normally listen to music to be able to watch something while listening to the artists song to attract people who look for short emotional films . They are also used to make the listeners of the songs be entertained while listening to the music and listen to the songs multiple times and hopefully telling other people about the video which makes the song become more and more known and hopefully liked. The benefits to this is that the artist can become more known and will be able to produce more songs and make more profit.
Some music videos that use stop motion are:
Its Magic - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGoOhZN_PR8
This music video is based on older people as they are the people who listened to these types of songs when they were younger and are most likely still listening to them. It is also based on people who create stop motion animations themselves.
Wide Awake - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcMkQwOmx9g
This music video's audience would be katy perry's audience, which is mainly teenager girls. But as it is also a fan-made stop motion animation it will also be focused on showing animators and people who create films themselves.

Computer games:
Computer games are made to entertain people who like to go into a virtual world and do anything they want while playing a storyline. Games have become very popular and are a good way to advertise objects that are likely to be bought by the people playing the games.
Computer games have a whole range of age restricted games. Games that can be played at 18 plus are; GTA, Assassins Creed, Insanity and COD. So when these games came out the trailers for them was based of adults older than 18. Games like Minecraft, Fortnite and Lego games are all based for children around 12 and less (Fortnite 12+) so the trailers will be for the younger audience and possibly having a narrator, colour and a lot of things to do in the game.

Websites:
Stop motion is used in websites to make the website look more fresh and modern to impress the people viewing it as well as keeping people entertained while going through the website. It is also used to make the website more fun for younger people looking through the website to make it more universal and can be used for everyone. Nowadays most companies use it in their websites so their company can look more professional. They also use it so advertise more of their products from anywhere on the website.
Companies like:
Apple, Samsung and clothing brands like New Look, Timer-Lands and Gucci.

TV:
TV's are used to make the viewers become entertained and 'addicted' to the things they watch and make them come back every day or week to watch the programme or film. TV programmes and films have breaks around every 10 minutes which gives around 3 times of advert time, giving the people selling the product to reach millions of people who are more likely to but the products.
TV shows / Movies that are aired on tv that use stop motion animation are:
Fantastic Mr.Fox - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2igjYFojUo
The audience type for this movie is children as it is based off a children's novel and is very well known from a children's book writer.
The Simpsons - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB7VF980cEA
This TV animation series is originally ment for adults and people around the 20's. But when it first aired young people watched it and loved the humor in it so it gradually turned into an any age programme but any young person watching been allowed to watch it,
The Clay Kids - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCCRhGbGJfg
This animated tv series is directed for young teens around 10+ as there are jokes for younger people and is based around a group of young friends.

Techniques and Formats:
Time-Lapse:
A time-lapse is used in movies to show the duration of time and what period you are now in. The editors can be creative with this as there is no wrong way at doing them. Movies like 'Twilight' use them to show how a character is feeling over a period of time. Other movies would use them to show the seasons change, the change in landscape and more. Some documentaries use time-lapse to show the audience the destruction in a landscape.

Plasticine:
Plasticine is used in movies to create human like objects or random non-living things. It is used to make a story done by man-made things. The only thing with using plasticine is that you will have to control the amount of times the object blinks and to make sure everything that is moveable is moving in each frame. Movies like 'Wallace and Gromit', 'Alice' made in 1988 and a movie that came out this year, 2018, called 'Early man'.

Claymation:
Claymation is a form of stop motion animation and is part of the plasticine animation type.
Examples of this animation are:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPVi_5JIeNE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA2XrXeHSRg
Pingu the penguin - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJlWLVgozVs

Found objects:
This type of animation is done by using everyday objects and turn them into other things in a movie or make them use the objects around them to make the film more interesting. An example of this animation is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woG9-k7kWE4

Cut out:
Cut out animation is a 2D animation with cut out pictures of the characters, props and backgrounds. This type of animation is easier to make then others because there is the same objects and only a few pictures for each character, so it is a much faster process of animation to film. An example of this animation would be Charlie and Lola.

Puppetry:
This type of animation is made by puppets. The objects that are the focal point of each movie are puppets and are controlled by either strings or sticks. This type of animation is for children entertainment and can be either recorded or played in a circus. An example of this animation is 'The Muppets'.

Human Stop Motion (Pixilation)
This animation type is made by taking photos with the main object moving slightly in each frame and when sped up it looks like it is moving at what ever pace you want it to.
Some examples of this animation is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT1lpCdlr68
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkxWdSX1gmA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3p2TZ5q9to

I think the animation type that is best suited for a younger audience would be Claymation or Plasticine, as these are very creative and if used right and have breathing and blinks in the eyes, the clay figures that are ment to be like human can come to life and look more realistic. It is also an animation that can be more creative with colour in the filming process, having any colour to choose from while creating the characters, it can be as dull or colourful as you want it to be. I think this is good for the audience because children are always surrounded by colour and the animation you would make would make the children want to watch it. Movies like 'Pingu' are a great example because it is about an animal that goes on adventures and has sound effects and colours that makes the children want to watch more.

I think the animation type that is best suited for an older audience would be Human Stop Motion as it is more relatable as the audience are watching something that is like themselves. As humans play characters in this type of animation it makes the older audience want to watch as it can tell more adult themed storylines and situations that happen in real life and will make the older viewers enjoy watching something more realistic and would make them want to watch more later on.

Assignment One: Development

Pioneers
Introduction:
I will be listing three people who made progress in the animation industry. These people made great inventions and they impacted the animation industry in a positive way.. I chose these three inventors because their work impacted the animation industry and helped us achieve the understanding of modern animation.

Joseph Plateau

Image result for Phénakisticope
Phenakisticope
Image result for Joseph PlateauJoseph Plateau invented the Phénakisticope in 1841. This is the first animation device that created a fluid illusion of motion worldwide. The Phénakisticope comes with a cardboard disc which can spin and has a handle attached to it. The user would spin the handle and the cardboard would move, the image on the cardboard would then move which will make It look like the pattern on the cardboard is moving.

Joseph Plateau's work helped the study of animation as we learned that if images moved fast enough at a constant speed the object on the image will come to life and become a role, this effected modern day animation as animations were used like this to try and show an audience of people an object moving.

William Horner
Image result for • William Horner (zoetrope) gifImage result for • William Horner (zoetrope)William Horner invented the Zoetrope in 1834. This is a moveable cylinder box that has holes in the side and photos in the inner wall. When you spin the box and look through the holes it will show an object moving. Depending on how realistic the image looks when moving is dependant on how fast the box is spinning.
The Zoetrope is a 48 frame per second animation, which is fast enough to create the illusion of movement.

This helped modern animation as it helped the progress of moving objects in image form and can be viewed by a person.

Emile Reynaud
Image result for Emile Reynaud
Praxinoscope
Image result for Emile Reynaud
The Praxinoscope was invented by Emile Reynaud in 1877. The Praxinoscope is similar to the Zoetrope, but has rectangular mirrors instead of slots. The mirrors are located in the middle of the object and reflects the images moving around it but it would only be viewed in low light and a few people at a time. The Praxinoscope was a toy made to imitate movement and was used to show drawings and paintings.

This invention helps modern day animation because it was the first movie film projector and gave the ability to display images to audiences, which later on can turn into longer animation that can tell an actual story to the audience.

Developers
Introduction:
I will be showing examples of people who helped to achieve the progress of the animation industry and helped achieve the quality of animations nowadays.

Image result for Willis O'BrienWillis O’Brien (March 1886 - November 1962)

Willis O'Brein was a motion picture special effects and stop motion animation pineer.

'some of the best known images in cinema history'
-Taken from Wikipedia

Willis O'Brien used Stop Motion Animation to create 'The Lost World' in 1925'. From his method, he made it possible for film makers to create films with CGI and create their work more easily and be more creative with it.
Examples of people who used Stop Motion Animation are:
Ray Harrausen who made 'The Clash of the Titian's' in 1981.
Tim Burton who produced 'A Nightmare Before Christmas. in 1993.

Ray Harryhausen (June 1920 - May 2013)
Image result for Ray HarryhausenRay Harryhausen is a visual effects creator, writer and producer. He created a form of stop motion called Dynamation.

Dynamation is a form of animation that has a high level of animation that interacts with real life. For example, real people running away from a dinosaur in a city.

How to Bridge a Gorge (How to Build a Bridge) (S)
Ray Harryhausen's first animation was 'How to Bridge a Gorge'. The 5 minute stop motion movie was about how to build a bridge over a gorge that can stand military equipment.

Ray Harryhausen's first Dynamation was The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms made in 1953 and is about Arctic Circle researchers donate a nuclear device and accidentally unleash a beast frozen for decades and destroys cities and parts of the world.

His invention effected the world of animation because he made it possible for animations to interact with real life. He helped future animators by giving them another form of animation they can improve and be more creative with. Without his work we wouldn't have Jurassic world, jaws.

Some movies that are animated by Ray Harryhausen are:

He worked on stop motion animation with puppets and clay sculptures to create an animation movie to tell a story. he wanted to make the audience be entertained with his animations. He effected the world of animation because he is an example of using ma-made objects like dolls, puppets and sculptures and made them into a animation to entertain people. Their work helps other people in the animation industry because he helped the understanding of stop motion on sculptures and puppets, and put everything together to create a fluid and have a film run softly to entertain people. Because of this, we have movies like 'The Muppets' and 'Hoop in a Mood' which are both children based entertainment film.

Contemporary
Introduction:
I will be showing you two people who created movies for certain audience types. They used certain animation types to create their movies and used the same type in all of their movies. I will be giving examples of their work and what audiences types they are based on and if they accomplished to attract that audience type.

Tim Burton:
Tim Burton was influenced by Christopher Lee, Paul Whitehouse, Edward Gorey, Georges Meles and Alan Moore. These influences gave Tim Burton the inspiration to create the films he did and with the creative movie ideas that followed. Like The Nightmare Before Christmas. His work was always about happy stories, but he enjoyed getting the audiences sympathy. For example in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, he used Willy Wonka's childhood flashbacks to gain the audiences sympathy as well as showing more of the characters backstory and why they act the way they do. Majority of his audiences would be Children, the movies like Dumbo and Alice in Wonderland. However, he also has an audience that are older as he made movies like Batman, Sweeney Todd, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Planet of the Apes and these movies attract more teenagers+ who want a more adult movie, but isn't completely adult and doesn't completely have swearing etc, so it is a good stepping spot. His animations have a age rating of either 'U' or mostly 'PG' as they could be scary for younger audiences

Alice In Wonderland is about a girl who isn't happy in the normal world and has an incredible imagination which leads her to discover a whole new and exciting world.

His animations are popular because he based some of his movies off books and have worked with well known companies like Disney. His work was more successful than Harryhausens because his work had more magical story lines and made younger audiences relate via their imagination more.

Nick park:
Image result for Nick parkNick Parks movies include: Flushed Away, Early Man, Wallace and Gromit, Arther Christmas and Shawn the Sheep: The Movie. The audience he is trying to get is young children / children / teens as these movies are PG friendly. From looking through the list of movies, you can see he likes to make movies out of things he can control and that are not human like. You can also see his animation skills improve over the years with the newer movies coming out. His most recent animation is called Early Man made in 2018 and his oldest is called 'creature comforts' made in 1989. Altogether his work is to entertain young audiences with the animation type that takes a long time to complete, with the the movement of the eyes and body gestures taking longer than animated as it is done by hand. His animations have an age rating of 'U'.

Movies:
Chicken Run - 2000

Image result for Chicken Run
Chicken Run is about a bunch of chickens that try to escape where they live due to a new machine that can kill them and make them into foods faster.
Early Man - 2018

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. it about two friends who investigate why certain things are happening and realizing it is because of this new species.

His animations are popular because he made his animations have good story lines and audiences could clearly see how much time he took to make them as they were incredibly detailed. I think his animations were more popular than Harreyhousen because his animations were more detailed and incredible graphics.

Unit 24

Mood and atmosphere Moods are used to make the characters feel more involved with the scene and feel more relate-able towards it. Moods are...
